What is NREGA Aadhaar-based payment system?
After December 31, 2023, all workers seeking employment under the Centre’s National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) must transition to the Aadhaar-based payment bridge system (ABPS). Until this deadline, NREGA workers can receive their wages through either account-based payments or Aadhaar-based payments. What is NREGA Aadhaar-based payment system.
Recall that the ministry informed state governments that starting February 1, 2023, all payments to NREGA beneficiaries must go through the Aadhaar-based payment system (ABPS). This deadline has been extended multiple times since then.
It is important to note that the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA uses the Aadhaar-based payment bridge system (ABPS), not the Aadhaar-enabled payment system (AePS). Additionally, the government mandated using the National Mobile Monitoring System (NMMS) app for attendance from January 1, 2023.
What is Aadhaar-based bridge payment system (ABPS)?
As per the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (ABPS) is a distinctive payment mechanism that leverages Aadhaar numbers as the central identifier to electronically route government subsidies and benefits into Aadhaar-Enabled Bank Accounts (AEBA) of the recipients.
Holders of NREGA job cards need to link their bank accounts with Aadhaar and synchronize them with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) mapper to enrol in the ABPS.
What is NPCI mapper?
The NPCI mapper functions as a repository where the APBS stores Aadhaar numbers. It is utilized to direct APB transactions to the respective destination banks. This repository includes Aadhaar numbers linked with the IIN (Issuer Identification Number) of the customer’s bank. Banks must upload Aadhaar numbers onto the NPCI mapper using a designated file format accessible through the NACH portal.
How the Aadhaar Payment Bridge (APB) System works?
Requirements for Aadhaar-based bridge payment system
To initiate a bank account using Aadhaar and link it via NPCI mapper, you must furnish your KYC information and undergo biometric and demographic verification. Any disparities between Aadhaar records and your bank account must be resolved. Please reconcile these differences to ensure timely wage payments linked to the NREGA Job Card.

No NREGA workers denied wage due to Aadhaar-based payment system: Govt
On August 2, 2023, the Ministry of Rural Development announced that no worker enrolled in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) had been deprived of wage payments due to the Aadhaar-Based Payment System (ABPS). The ministry emphasized the ABPS’s effectiveness in ensuring punctual wage disbursement to NREGS beneficiaries despite challenges posed by frequent changes in their bank account details. This adoption of ABPS aims to prevent disruptions caused by outdated bank account information and to safeguard the fact that only legitimate beneficiaries receive the scheme’s benefits.
